Closer

|

Stars were travelling through the eastern sky
I hardly noticed that time was passing by
Light was fading and the shadows were fading too
You were trembling, I didn’t know what to do
So I thought about holding you tight
And asking if things were ok
But I didn’t know what you’d do
Wasn’t sure what you’d say
So I just moved a little closer
We started walking down a quiet, lonely street
Footsteps behind us were marching to our beat
Your arm slipped through mine, I could tell you were afraid
Probably wondering just where had we strayed
So I thought about holding you tight
And asking if things were ok
But I didn’t know what you’d do
Wasn’t sure what you’d say
So I just moved a little closer
Sitting by the harbour, with moonlight shining on the sea
Waves gently swirling underneath that old wooden quay
You looked towards me then you turned away
I wished the night could last much longer, but daylight would soon be on its way
So I thought about holding you tight
And asking if things were ok
But I didn’t know what you’d do
Wasn’t sure what you’d say
So I just moved a little closer
Then you also moved closer

Autumn days are here and the young birds have flown
Leaving their nests
They’ll return in spring when hope is in the air
And the world lives again
Green leaves turn to red, then tumble and swirl
Shadows stretch out and the nights grow darker
As we wait for snowflakes to fall
Our love once was new, we tried to slow down time
But the world kept turning, as the seasons changed
I sat an held your hand as you brought life to our world
I heard our daughter cry
Growing up together and learning from each other
Those days passed quickly by
Now those times are gone and our child is a woman
She’s left us on our own as she spreads her wings
And we wait for snowflakes to fall
Our love once was new, we tried to slow down time
But the world kept turning, as the seasons changed
Now we’re left together, slowly getting older
Still very much in love
Making use of time to make each moment count
As our twilight deepens
How can we be sure that we can still hold on
In each others arms just a little longer
Til we see those snowflakes start to fall
We want to see those snowflakes fall

Goodnight Vin
04:05
|
|||
All the very best said the man with a song
As he poured out his heart on the stage
He sang of the people who lived all around him
And worked in the towns where he played
In the land of three rivers, his jokes he did tell
And his voice sang louder to people who listened
And joined in his chorus as well
Goodnight Vin, we miss you
Why did you leave us so soon
Your stories and tales were unfinished
And I wish we could hear one more tune
"Have you heard this one", he often did say
With a face as straight as could be
And he had us in stitches as his stories unfolded
And his punchlines finally broke free
His voice was unique, his patter the best
We were lucky to have him, fortunate to hear him
And listen to his tales and his jest
Goodnight Vin, we miss you
Why did you leave us so soon
Your stories and tales were unfinished
And I wish we could hear one more tune
The lives of the people from Darwin to Dili
Nicaragua, El Salvador as well
Were told in great detail, we heard of their sorrows
And the tyrants who made their life hell
The 'Flowers and the Guns' told of Salazar's fall
And 'Little Nawa's Song' spoke of chemical weapons
As truth spoke so loud in the hall
Goodnight Vin, we miss you
Why did you leave us so soon
Your stories and tales were unfinished
And I wish we could hear one more tune
'Welcome Home Howard Green' from 'The Troubles Of Erin’
Brought Irelands recent past into view
With a 'Welcome So Warm' for all in the audience
And 'Absent Friends' remembered too
With a tune on his whistle sounding crisp and so clear
Fingers dancing and skipping past holes
He made all of our cares disappear
Goodnight Vin, we miss you
Why did you leave us so soon
Your stories and tales were unfinished
And I wish we could hear one more tune
Goodnight Vin, we miss you
Why did you leave us so soon
Your stories and tales were unfinished
And I wish we could hear one more tune

Incroyable
02:44
|

It’s incredible the way I feel, when I’m standing next to you
And I see that look flashing in your eyes
People turn to stare as you softly start to sing
Then you walk away but the magic lingers on
Tonight’s the night I want to be with you
As stars fill the Paris sky
I only hope that once the daylight breaks
This chance for love, won’t have passed us by
It’s unbelievable how things change, in such a space of time
It’s only been hours since we met
Dancing cheek to cheek and holding you so close
It seems such a natural thing to do
Ce soir c’est la nuit, où je veux être avec toi
Alors que les étoiles-remplissent le ciel de Paris
J’espère seulement que quand le lever du jour viendra
Cette chance d’amour ne nous aura pas échappé
It’s amazing the different ways that things like this can start
And how a single touch can lead to more
Walking hand in hand as the River Seine flows by
Moonlight shines so bright it’s hard to hide
Tonight’s the night I want to be with you
As stars fill the Paris sky
I only hope that once the daylight breaks
This chance for love, won’t have passed us by
Cette chance d’amour ne nous aura pas échappé

The Kaiser and the King
04:02
|
|||
The stars were still sleeping when you went away
I’ll never forget that day
Up before daybreak before you could leave
I was trying to hold back the tears
Wondering if this was the last time I’d see you
Would you come home when the fighting was done
A curse on generals and those politicians
Who send our men off to war
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
Sleep safely in their beds
I remember the first time you held me so close
And the way that you smiled at me
Ever since then you’ve been part of my life
And it broke my heart to see you go
Already the streets in our village are empty
Of men away fighting so far from their land
The widow’s black is seen all too often
And postmen are feared when they knock at a door
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
Sleep safely in their beds
Passchendale, Ypres, Verdun and the Somme
Were names that we never did hear
Until two million men laid down their lives
In those places we now know so well
What good is a war to mothers and daughters
And wives of the men who will never come home
I hope you’ll stay safe until it’s all over
And this war will end before it’s too late
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
The Kaiser and the King
Sleep safely in their beds
Please come home to me
I’m here waiting for you

I Heard You Sing A Song
03:56
|
|||
Pete, I sang your song tonight
Where have all the flowers gone
What happened to those brave young men
Who marched away to war
How many came back home again
Or still lie in lonely graves
Your songs tried to change their ways
So they could wear flowers in their hair
I heard you sing a song for freedom
I heard you sing a song for peace
I heard you sing a song for our troubled earth
Now I’m singing this song for you
Pete, I saw you marching by
With Martin Luther King
Walking slowly hand in hand
Singing we shall overcome
You faced Jim Clark and all his bully boys
That day on Selma bridge
Travelling to Montgomery
So you could let freedom ring
I heard you sing a song for freedom
I heard you sing a song for peace
I heard you sing a song for our troubled earth
Now I’m singing this song for you
You said, “I’d rather put a song on someone’s lips than in their ears
It takes singers to bring songs to life
Make a song your own by singing it
And be proud of the songs that you sing”
Pete, you stood on picket lines
Putting tunes to workers words
Helping people fight for jobs
Showing which side you were on
Giving hope to everyone
With your songs and winning smile
My friend, thanks for singing out
And making this land your’s and mine

Waltzing With Clara
02:55
|
|||
I’m waltzing with Clara again
I’m sweeping her round the room
Heads turn as we pass
They’re hoping to dance with her soon
But Clara’s dancing with me
No way I’m standing aside
I’m not losing this chance
To dance and hold her so tight
We’re walking the streets late at night
Lovers pass hand in hand
No one can hear what they say
Taking a route that’s unplanned
All of the buildings sparkle
The frost is shining so bright
The Danube is flowing so swiftly
And it’s cold in Vienna tonight
The sun’s shining bright in Firenze
I remember each word you said
Often my thoughts go astray
But these ones still live in my head
Santa Maria cathedral
Climbing four hundred steps to the sky
Finally asking my question
And waiting to hear your reply
Now I’m waiting for something quite different
Sitting here by your side
Our dancing days are behind us
But I still see you circle and glide
Finally the music stops playing
And you’re no longer dancing with me
But every night I still hear it
One, two, three - one, two three - one, two three
One, two, three - one, two three - one, two three

Fools and Princes
04:47
|
|||
Thirteen years old, she doesn’t know
Just how cruel this world can be
She’s so in love that nothing else matters
He feels exactly the same as she
Lying next to each other as their hearts beat and soar
They’re hoping for a lifetime together
Oh you fools and princes, did you think that you could win
Every time you spun the wheel of fate
Two star crossed lovers talking of their dreams
And all of their hopes and fears
Hand in hand, too young to do much more
Consoling each other through their tears
Leading families divided, a city forced into taking sides
As Montague’s and Capulet’s bicker
Oh you fools and princes, did you think that you could win
Every time you spun the wheel of fate
What can they say, what can they do
But shelter in each other’s arms
While the world goes mad, young men draw their swords
And swagger through the streets of Verona
Voices raised and daggers flash, one of them stumbles and falls
And his life’s blood ebbs away in the gutter
Oh you fools and princes, did you think that you could win
Every time you spun the wheel of fate
He didn’t mean to thrust so hard and deep
And cause the whole world to change
If only he could have that chance again
He’d slowly turn and walk away
Planning to leave town that evening, leaving their families behind
Romeo and Juliet are together
Romeo and Juliet will always be together

How Could I Know
05:07
|
|||
Once I saw your face, I just knew right from the start
You were the one for me, but I never knew you’d break my heart
You looked my way and I heard you softly say
“Do you think he’d like to dance with me”
Your friend came up to me and she asked if I would dance
Quickly partners changed and I found myself dancing with you
I hardly spoke a word, I think you were the same
But I remember that first kiss later
How could I know, what lay in store
Years down the road, when we’d meet again
I still don’t know, just what it was you saw in me
But we were so very close, back in those days at school
When you got a place, to study so far away
We slowly began to drift apart
How could I know, what lay in store
Years down the road, when we’d meet again
I still recall, lying next to you
And the touch of your skin
Then watching as you put your dress back on
Walking down the street, two children by my side
I saw you with your friend and you stopped to talk to me
You both stood hand in hand, your girlfriend by your side
Then you kissed me on the cheek and said goodbye
You kissed me on the cheek and said goodbye

I am a woman who knows no bounds
I gave my heart to you
How was I to know the truth
About the things you’d do
The nights will always live in my dreams
Sometimes in my day
The only man to capture my soul
But that was yesterday
There was a time I believed all your lies
And all the things you’d say
I gave you my heart to hold in your hands
You threw it all away
Now all the things that didn’t make sense
Didn’t quite seem real
Suddenly all fell into place
With secrets you couldn’t conceal
I saw you smile and hold her so close
You kissed her like she was me
Then you turned and saw my face
Too late to try and pull free
There was a time I believed all your lies
And all the things you’d say
I gave you my heart to hold in your hands
You threw it all away
You made the biggest mistake you could make
Cause this isn’t like Jolene
Your bags were packed and waiting for you
No need to make a scene
Now you can go wherever you want
With anyone you please
I am a woman who knows no bounds
I’ll never be on my knees

There's room in my heart since you’ve gone away
Even though it still thinks that you’re there
I’ve tried so hard to fill up that space
Telling myself I don’t care
But maybe it’s different and I’m living a lie
Hoping that you’ll come back soon
Here all alone, hiding from daylight
Waiting to dance with the moon
People out walking smile as they pass by
They don’t know how broken I feel
I’m still waiting for time to move on
Wishing my heart can soon heal
But maybe it’s different and I’m living a lie
Hoping that you’ll come back soon
Here all alone, hiding from daylight
Waiting to dance with the moon
I thought I saw you last week in the park
I nearly called out your name
If you were here, the seasons could change
Instead of them feeling the same
But maybe it’s different and I’m living a lie
Hoping that you’ll come back soon
Here all alone, hiding from daylight
Waiting to dance with the moon
There’s room in my heart that I’m trying to share
With someone who’s different to you
Friends all say I should see someone else
It’s time that this hurting was through
But maybe it’s different and I’m living a lie
Hoping that you’ll come back soon
Here all alone, hiding from daylight
Waiting to dance with the moon
There's room in my heart since you’ve gone away
Even though it still thinks that you’re there
I’ve tried so hard to fill up that space
Telling myself I don’t care
